The never used train station Lelystad Zuid tickles immediately your imagination. De Barak wanted to transform this rough and sturdy mass of concrete into a cultural destination. The character of the building should remain harsh and all the interventions had to be vandalism resistant. The building should accommodate an Artist in Residence (AIR), 6 to 8 events per year and a storage space. There are currently no facilities and connections to the public utilities available and this needed to be solved as well.

The research lead to the following proposal. The space under the railway platforms is the most suitable for exhibitions and events. By placing a red fence that reaches from the ceiling to the floor, the place gets a frame without losing its rough character. The platform on the south side is the best spot for the AIR. Here you can create with the housing for the artists an eye-catcher towards the visitors. The free standing staircase on the North side has already landmark qualities. By emphasizing this with the red fence and making it even taller, you’ll get an icon with a splendid panoramic view. A print along the platform on which artists can exhibit their work, will have a significant exposure with the number of 11.000 daily passing train-travelers.
With the same red fencing material sitting elements and other special objects suitable for events can be made. The empty space between the indoor stairs is lockable and perfect for storage and a bathroom. For its energy and water supply a proposal was made for self-sufficient solutions.
